Manoj Bajpayee's 'Bhonsle' to premiere at Busan Film Festival

National Award winning actor Manoj Bajpayee starrer political drama Bhonsle will have its World Premiere at the upcoming 23rd Busan International Film Festival 2018 in the "A Window on Asian Cinema" section.

The film festival will be held from October 4-13.

Bhonsle, directed by Devashish Makhija, is nominated for the "Kim Jiseok Award" in the "A Window on Asian Cinema" section. The award will be given out together with a cash prize of 10,000 US dollars to the final two films, selected by the jury members at the Closing Ceremony, which will be held on 13 October.

"We are honoured to premiere Bhonsle in the prestigious Busan Film Festival. Bhonsle is my third film after Aligarh and In The Shadows to premiere at Busan. Bhonsle is special for me in so many ways. I have co-produced it and it is coming out in the 25th year of my career," Manoj said in a statement.

The Satyameva Jayate star will be seen in the titular role of a terminally ill lone wolf Maharashtrian police officer named Bhonsle, retired against his will, in politically tumultuous Mumbai.

Manoj says the film's script came to him around four and a half years ago.

"I strongly believed in the script and the director and we are fortunate to find an amazing producing partner with Muvizz. I am glad that our vision is turning into reality and Busan selection proves that we were on the right path," he added.

Makhija says to have his films premiered in Korea is like coming home.

"The Korean audiences at Busan last year welcomed Ajji as if it had been made by one of their own. I am hoping for a similar reception for Bhonsle," he added.

The film also features a stellar cast like Marathi star Santosh Juvekar, theatre actress Ipshita Chakraborty Singh and child artiste Virat Vaibhav.

Producer Piiyush Singh of Indie Muviz said, “The film works at two levels; firstly, it deals with the issue of immigrants and the conflict which arises due to man-made boundaries; and secondly, it takes us into the inner life of lonely policeman Bhonsle, who, irrespective of his caste and region, fights to remain 'humane' first, before all else.”

Co-producer Sandiip Kapur of Promodome Motion Pictures added, “We have always believed in content-driven cinema and the premiere of such a film at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival encourages us to continue being part of such films in future.”

Story of Mary Kom inspired me personally: Omung Kumar

Filmmaker Omung Kumar, who stepped into the director's shoes with film Mary Kom- a biopic on MC Mary Kom, became nostalgic as the film will complete four years on Wednesday. He says that the story of real-life boxing champion inspired him personally.

Mary Kom was a biopic of real-life boxing champion MC Mary Kom, in which actress Priyanka Chopra had portrayed the sports icon.

Omung said in a statement, "I wanted the nation to know about the boxer Mary Kom who won so many awards and accolades for our country in boxing. Her story has been an inspiration for everyone. Being a mother and a sportswoman, she equally managed her family with sports.”

"And I felt the urge to give back to the society by telling a story through the medium of cinema which inspired me personally and also inspired the nation after they watched it."

Backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film was a huge hit and has received various awards including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

"We wanted to make the boxing scenes authentic and look as real as possible. And so some of our crew members and I learnt boxing to get the necessary understanding of the sport in order to film the fight scenes," added Omung while talking about the shooting of the film.

Apart from Mary Kom, Omung has directed critically acclaimed movies like Sarabjit and Bhoomi.

Sanjai Mishra-Deepak Dobriyal's 'Kaamyaab' to have a world premiere in Busan

National Award-winning filmmaker Hardik Mehta's maiden debut fiction feature Kaamyaab, featuring the inimitable Sanjai Mishra and Deepak Dobriyal in a story about a seasoned character actor, will have its world premiere at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) next month.

The film is backed by Eros International and Drishyam Films.

For Mehta, whose Gujarati-language documentary Amdavad Ma Famous won a National Award and who wrote Trapped, it's a "great high" that his first feature film will be shown at Busan, what he calls the "mecca of Asian cinema".

"It's a great high that my first feature getting to such a film festival. I am very happy that Drishyam Films chose to produce this film because nobody else could have produced a movie like this, in Mumbai at least. They gave a very free hand," Mehta told a media portal over the phone.

The film, he says, is about a character actor and his obsession for achieving a milestone.

"It's about how at the fag end of your life, you realize that all your life you did something, but if you did that one little thing, your life would be complete. It's about a character actor who did many roles but didn't do one important role. That's the journey of the film," Mehta said.

Its first look poster features Sanjai in various avatars of a character actor.

"I really wanted Sanjai Mishra sir to do the film because he has himself been a character actor and he has seen the whole evolving phase of Hindi cinema. He came in during the early 1990s and has seen how the shift has happened from mainstream films to interesting content-driven films also.

"I wanted somebody of his age, and his energy also... Sanjay sir is around 50-55, but he has the energy of a 25-year-old. It's the kind of Sanjai Mishra that we haven't seen till now," he said.

Also, with Sanjai and Deepak sharing the screen space, it's a casting coup which Mehta hopes will leave the audience with a smile on their face with their "magical performance".

There is a humorous vibe to the movie.

"It is a very Indian film, and very relatable to Hindi cinema's character actors. There is not so much stereotyping in the cinema outside India… But our industry has it that if an actor is playing an inspector, he will be seen as that, if he's a villain, then he will keep playing the villain.

"So, Kaamyaab, in a way is trying to give a tribute, but at the same time also be humorous about it. It's not that we are making a mockery of it, but there's just a lot of situational humour in it," Mehta said.

He is curious to know how Asian cinema people react to it though he feels "humour is universal".

The idea for such a movie germinated in Mehta's mind as he witnessed the evolution of cinema in India.

"I was born in 1983, and while growing up during the 1980s and 1990s, posters had 10-12 actors apart from the hero... There were actors like Sadashiv Amrapurkar, MacMohan, Sudhir, Viju Khote... and when we came to Mumbai to make films, all these faces went away from posters and only the hero's face was seen.

"Single screens started evolving into multiplexes. So, at first the idea was to do something around this single screen to multiplex trend, but then I thought it will be more about nostalgia and romanticising.

"That's when I thought of talking about a character actor who was a part of Hindi maintsream cinema always in the posters and songs... What do they do? It was more of a fascination and curiosity about their lives."

Drishyam Films founder Manish Mundra is proud about the journey that Kaamyaab is set to make.

"Our philosophy is to give young working directors and talent a platform to create world class cinema. We believe in the film and it's great to see it getting its due," Mundra told a leading publication.

The 23rd Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 4-13.

Manasi Parekh is back after maternity break with a Bollywood film

While many actresses may shy away from motherhood due to their career, actress and singer Manasi Parekh has taken it in her stride.  While Manasi has been working since her daughter Nirvi was three months old, the actress hadn't taken on any long term assignments.  Now we hear that she is back and with a bang as the actress is shooting for the upcoming Yami Gautam - Vicky Kaushal starrer Uri.  Our source informs us, "Manasi will be playing a resolute army officer’s wife - she is seen as Mohit Raina's wife and Vicky Kaushal's sister in the film.  She has a very bohemian look with lots of accessories and indo western clothes.”

We reached out to Manasi who confirmed and said, "This role was of a strong army wife and that's something we don't get to know about often.  What happens to the wives of the army officers when they are fighting for the country?  I have powerful scenes and director  Aditya Dhar has written  the story beautifully. Also, getting to share screen space with Vicky Kaushal, Mohit Raina and Swaroop Sampat was too exciting for me as an actor."

And while Manasi may not have been part of the Serbia schedule for the film, we believe she's already shot for her role and by the looks of her posts on social media, daughter Nirvi too was on sets with Manasi while she was shooting.  Now that's called the best of both worlds, isn't it?
