Founders of Frames Productions' - Ranjeet Thakur and Hemant Ruprell get chatty with Tellychakkar.com

Founders of Frames Productions

It’s always a pleasure when you work with people who you know - and this is exactly how the founders of Frames Productions, Ranjeet Thakur and Hemant Ruprell came together to form a production house of their own.

Well, the result is for the audience to see, as the duo has churned out some of the best moments in non-fiction genre on Indian television. Presently, they are geared up for the next season of their big-ticket reality show on Star Plus, Nach Baliye. Excerpts of a candid conversation of the twosome with Tellychakkar.com.

How did you start your company?

Hemant (H) - I and Ranjeet (Thakur) have been working together for quite a long time. We have been handling non-fiction for Zee TV. Since we had a great equation, we planned to get together and thus Frames Productions was born in September 2011. I basically handle the business part, whereas Ranjeet is deft with taking care of the creative aspects. So it’s all sorted between us.

Tell us more about Frame Productions…

(H)- We have been a part of Dance India Dance 3, DID Lil Masters 2 and Nach Baliye 5 as producers. Also we have been working on digital marketing, having made two shows of non-fiction formats of 15 weeks for digital platforms - Hungama.com & Artistaloud.com – a chat show & a singing show respectively. Also we have ventured into the regional sphere with our new kids-based dance reality show, MAD that is being aired on ETV Marathi.

Nach Baliye was already a big name, so was it an advantage or rather a challenge to produce it?

(H)- It’s of course a bigger challenge since there is already a level set. And with that, responsibility automatically increases. There are loads of expectations but since we have worked with reality shows we know the trend well to give the audience the best show.

Any changes we will see this year in Nach Baliye 6?

Ranjeet (R)- Of course! We have always believed in giving out variety to the audience, and experimenting with more interesting stuff. So yes, the audience can expect a bigger and better show than last year.

There have been rumours of stars faking up a relationship to be on Nach Baliye. Your comments on the same…

(R)- You said it yourself, they are all rumours. We make it a point to only have couples with real relations. We have a strong research team that does intense study of every couple that we select. And for people who feel they can fake and get into the show, it’s a big ‘sorry’ to them. Even if you notice last year, we had 70 percent of them who were actually married couples. A lot of emotions are involved with this show and we cannot play with the audience’s trust.

How difficult it is to make reality shows?

(H)- It is a huge task; you hardly get time to even breathe. At one go you have to check on the creative and production side. Handling a crew of more than 350 people at a time is not an easy task, but with time I guess we have managed to crack it.

And what about your plans of entering into fiction space?

(H)- Tellychakkar.com had reported about our new production house Panorama Entertainment which will see us venturing into the fiction space. With Panorama, we also have Suzzana Ghai coming on board with us. And well it’s still in a nascent stage, so I would wait before giving any confirmation.

What have you got to say about the talent of youngsters in India?

(R)- There is a lot of talent in India, genuinely at par with international level. But I must say that we lack on the scale of training. But that is the beauty of our shows, where an untrained young talent works day and night to bring out the best. And that can only happen when we give such platforms to these young people.

These days it’s more about glamour quotient rather than pure talent in reality shows?

(R)- After working in this business for so long, we have managed to develop an eye for true talent. We know how much importance our shows are for these youngsters; so we know how to choose the best and the most passionate amongst the lot. We have seen people making a career out of these shows, so we do get careful of choosing only the deserving.

DID winner Dharmesh is one of the judges on MAD. Your thoughts about him.

(R)- Completely! It’s via his hard work and humility that he has managed to come so far. It is a proud moment for him as well as us to see him on such a grand scale. Even Salman (Yussuf Khan), Punit (Pathak), Kunwar (Amar) and Shakti (Mohan) have done so well for themselves.

Just for curiosity, how do you select choreographers for your shows?

(R)- We have been in the circuit for quite some time, so we know a lot of choreographers. And since we go for auditions we find some really talented dancers who just need a chance to prove themselves and we present them with that.

And finally how real are the reality shows?

(R)- It is very real. We do work on thought processes and trigger some emotions but that’s about it. We might create a situation but then we do not have any idea about where it might lead to.
