While Aamir Khan and the rest of the cast and crew continue to bask in the assorted glory that Dhoom 3’s astounding success has ushered in; Sanjay Gadhvi, the man who started it all a decade back with Dhoom, has silently stayed away from the spotlight. We caught up with the master director at Sies Frames Film Festival where Sanjay was invited to judge a short film competition. In a quick and candid tete-a-tete with us, Sanjay opens up on why he never directed Dhoom 3.

What does Dhoom mean to you?

In the history of mankind, there is something called BC which is Before Christ and AD that is Anno Domini. For me it is BD which is life before Dhoom and AD that is life after Dhoom. So right now I am in 10 AD, 10 years after the release of Dhoom. There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that it’s by far been the biggest film of my career. You are interviewing me because of Dhoom and not because of my other movies like Kidnap.

After giving blockbusters like Dhoom and Dhoom 2, one expected you to helm Dhoom 3 as well. What went wrong? Why didn’t you direct it?

(Shrugs) You should always keep somebody wanting something. You can’t keep giving every time.

What do you exactly mean by that?

Like, I wanted to do something else. It would have become an overdose had I done Dhoom 3 as well. I had directed two and I was okay with it.

You mean to say that you were saturated after directing just two installments of Dhoom?

Yeah sort of…

But there were many who wished that you had directed Dhoom 3?

See, people will have their opinions. I was meant to do three films with Yashraj and Dhoom 2 was my third film (Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hain and Dhoom were the other two). Before the release of Dhoom 2, I told Adi (Aditya Chopra) that I am moving out and he said ‘I wish you well’ and also told me ‘if you want to stay back you are more than welcome or else it is up to you.’ And there was no talk of Dhoom 3 in 2006.

Did Aditya ever approach you to direct Dhoom 3?

Adi never approached me as such. Also, I had moved out by then as I was eager to see the outside world. I wanted to face the challenges of the real world. You can’t be in your dad’s house all the time, right? So after I left, Adi must have decided to make Dhoom 3 and there was no reason for him to call me and ask ‘hey listen do you want to do it.’ Because my three film deal with YRF was already over.

Talking about the plot of Dhoom 3, the movie didn’t have a single bank heist scene in it. Don’t you think that was a huge let down?

I disagree. Where was robbery shown in Dhoom? We only showed it in the climatic heist sequence shot in a casino in Goa. There was nothing before that. So it’s the call that the filmmaker has taken about showing or not showing a heist.

Uday Chopra has decided not to act anymore. How do you see the further sequels of Dhoom developing in his absence?
Dhoom will not be the same without Uday Chopra. Period.

Would you like to direct any further sequels of Dhoom?

(Thinks) Mostly not. I am not inclined to but then again never say never. May be if there are any Hollywood stars and Adi approaches me then maybe I will (winks)
